These high profile players astonished the crowds, and not in a good way, this past season. These are Sports After Hours’ top 5 players to likely have a bounce back season this year:
5. Melvin Gordon
With a mediocre rookie year at best, Melvin Gordon will look to boost the San Diego offense this year as veteran quarterback Philip Rivers could really use the help. Last season, Rivers passed for 4,792 yards, averaging almost 300 yards per game through the air. However, despite a spectacular passing performance by Philip Rivers the Chargers managed just 4 wins last season. This goes to show the importance of Gordon’s role on the offensive side. Look for Gordon to shrug off the rookie season jitters, and turn things around this season with a solid ground performance.
4. Tony Romo
While he spent much of this past season on the sidelines, Romo will look to get his high powered offense to work this season. Provided that rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott has a breakout performance, Romo will be open to many offensive threats with wide outs Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, and Cole Beasley in the slot. If Elliott can provide the offense with a solid ground game, look for the Dallas Cowboys to be playoff contenders this NFL season.
3. Matthew Stafford
Matthew Stafford had higher hopes for his team last season as their offense could not seem to get into any rhythm. With star wide receiver Calvin Johnson in retirement, Stafford will have to find a new primary target in veteran wide receiver Anquan Boldin. Boldin proved to be a major threat in the Baltimore offense with quarterback Joe Flacco under center. Boldin seemed to be more effective with a pocket style quarterback running the offense. Look for Matthew Stafford to utilize his pocket passing abilities and get his Detroit offense rolling this season.
2. Demarco Murray
Demarco Murray’s performance with Philadelphia last season was not nearly as dynamic as his previous season with Dallas. This year, Murray will prove to be a great addition to a struggling Tennessee offense with quarterback Marcus Mariota calling the shots. It was evident that Tennessee was in need of a running back last season as they ranked 25th in rushing yards. Murray will look to turn that stat around and open up a passing game for Mariota, which he relied on so heavily last season.
1. Andrew Luck
Quarterback Andrew Luck is at the top of the bounce back list as his performance last season was one he would like to forget. With offensive line improvements, and a new addition in Robert Turbin at the running back position, Luck will try to earn that fat new paycheck and get his offense on the right path as he has the proper offensive tools to succeed this season.
